For all of us college football fans, this day has been so anticipated and it's finally here. I have to say after watching multiple games, it's obviously the first week because there was a lot of sloppy play, bad penalties, turnovers, questionable play calling and undesired results. Even with the sloppy play, it's just so nice to sit and watch multiple games at the same time again.
Today was just a taste. I think there's only 1 good game tomorrow night Washington @ Boise State. This is a very intriguing matchup with Chris Peterson going home to face his former team. I don't think it's going to be a very happy return for Chris as I'm sure Boise has had this game circled for a long time and the fans will be really into it. I just hope it's a good, close game.
Saturday is when the season gets in full swing with a bunch of really good, interesting match-ups. Here's a taste of the games: Stanford @ Northwestern, Texas @ Notre Dame, Louisville vs. Auburn (Atlanta), Arizona State @ Texas A&M (technically this game is a neutral field, but please it's in Houston so it's a home game for the Aggies), Virginia @ UCLA, Eastern Washington @ Oregon (Vernon Adams game), Alabama vs. Wisconsin (Jerry's World) and the game I'll be attending live Arkansas State @ USC.
An interesting point regarding the "Vernon Adams game". You know Eastern Washington is PISSED at Vernon Adams, not only for transferring, but disrespecting them by wearing Oregon gear at an Eastern Washington sporting event. That takes balls, or just plain stupidity. Don't be surprised to see them try to hurt Vernon Adams. If I was Mark Helfrich, I would've started Jeff Lockie but let Adams play a some series to get him ready for Michigan State in week 2. That way Adams gets in some quality reps, but also protect him from possibly getting hurt.
My take on the Thursday night games, Derek Mason taking over as D Coordinator for Vanderbilt was the right call. His defense played very well. He just needs a quality QB. Vandy was able to run the ball at will and move down the field with no problems. When they would get in the red zone, they had some questionable play calls which led to 2 INTs in the end zone. The first INT was a good play call, it's just that the QB held on to the ball too long and when he threw the ball it was into double coverage and was picked. His tight end was wide open earlier if he just threw it early it would've been an easy TD. The second INT in the end zone was another questionable play call, but was also poorly executed by the QB. Vanderbilt looks improved though and defense usually starts quicker so if they can fix the problems on offense they will have a better year than last year.
Utah & Michigan was the game I really wanted to see the most. As mentioned earlier, there was a lot of sloppy play on both sides. Michigan played very well, but Jake Rudock, the Iowa transfer, threw 3 picks including the game winning pick 6. For the most part Michigan outplayed Utah in my opinion, but Utah took advantage of the Michigan mistakes. Utah let the Wolverines hang around though. Utah's placekicker who is supposed to be one of the best, reliable kickers in the country missed 2 field goals that could've sealed the game for the Utes. It was a really good effort by Michigan, but they came up a little short losing 24-17.
TCU looked pretty strong to start off their game at Minnesota, but early in the 4th quarter, they are only up 20-10 and about to punt the ball back to the Gophers. So far they haven't looked like the #2 team in the country, but it's early and only game 1..
