Week 3 Rankings Update

I'm currently in Wabash, Indiana for work this week.  I won't be able to update my Week 3 rankings until I get back.  I'll probably update both Week 3 & Week 4 rankings this weekend.

It worked out perfectly that the Colts had their home opener on Monday night against the NY Jets.  Unfortunately, for the home team Colts it was not a good game, but I had a great time.  It was my first time experiencing an NFL game live.  I've heard many times from multiple people how great Lucas Oil Stadium is and the city of Indianapolis.  I have to agree.  The stadium is amazing and every seat has a great view.  Our seats were in the upper section about 9 rows from the top.  The picture above was taken from my seat.  Below are some additional pictures of the stadium both inside and out.

Week 2 Recap

Week 2 was another exciting week of college football.  There were some good games, such as Oklahoma vs Tennessee and Oregon vs Michigan State.  Both of these games everyone was looking forward to during the summer and they didn't disappoint.  On the other hand, there were some teams that performed badly, like Auburn who almost lost (and probably should have) to an FCS team Jacksonville State and South Carolina losing at home to Kentucky.

On the other hand, the night ended with another thrilling BYU hail mary pass.  The victim this time was Boise State.  To make the Broncos feel even worse, there was still 45 seconds left and their 1st play was a pick six to make the final score 35-24.

2015 Week 1 Rankings (Revised)

I had to revise my rankings for week 1 because I realized my strength of schedule for each teach had their opponents in alphabetical order instead of by date order. Therefore, there were some slight differences in the SOS points given and therefore the overall points value and rankings. Like all teams and officials in week 1, I too made mistakes.

Explanation of 2015 Rankings Part 2

Another point I forgot to mention in my previous post is that due to the fact my polls are solely based on actual results from games played that week, my polls are very fluid. That being said, if a team has a bye that week, they don't earn any points and therefore will definitely drop in that week's polls. So of you might think this isn't fair. All teams, well I should say most teams (Arizona not being one of them this year), have at least one bye week during the season. Due to this, I believe it all evens out. In Week 1 we had the perfect example of the fluidity of my polls. LSU was ranked #14 & #13 in the AP & Coaches polls respectively in the preseason polls. Since their game with McNeese St was cancelled due to weather, they dropped out of both of my polls. Now this week, they'll likely jump back in since they'll be playing at Mississippi St this Saturday, that is if they win. Another note regarding LSU is that this cancelled game might really hurt them at the end of the season. This game with McNeese St is not being rescheduled. Therefore, LSU will only have 11 regular season games instead of 12. This game was a lock for a win and they probably would have won by 20+ points, but since McNeese St is a FCS team, they would be getting a deduction for that. Even with that FCS deduction, they still would have quality points that they won't be able to make up. I'll keep an eye on LSU this year (hard for me to say that since I'm a USC fan and still don't like LSU after their bitching and moaning of splitting the national championship with USC in 2003 when USC was ranked #1 in both polls at the end of the regular season and got screwed by the BCS title game) to see how this missing game affects them. If it makes a big difference I'll have to think of a way to fix this for next year.

A Note Regarding my Week 1 Polls

Some of you might be curious why Ohio St is not number 1 in either one of my polls.  Well, as stated in a previous post, I added SOS component this year.  If you take a look at Ohio St schedule, it's not very daunting.  The B1G 10 isn't very strong this year with the exception of Ohio St and Michigan St.  There's a huge drop-off to the next tier of Penn St, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Michigan.  Week 1 results are not going to help Ohio St's SOS since the 4 teams listed in the next tier all lost in Week 1.  However, Michigan St plays a top 10 team in Oregon this week and I think they'll win so that will help the SOS.

For the same reason, that is why a bunch of teams ranked lower jumped up higher in my polls since they won their games by a large margin of victory (MOV) and also got bonus points for being in the top 50 of SOS rankings.

As I mentioned earlier, the SOS is recalculated each week so one week a team might get the maximum bonus points and another week in the year they either don't get as many or none at all, depending on how well the teams on their schedule do.  I'm really curious to see how this new added piece will work this season and see if I can the 4 teams in the playoffs correct.
